S.A.Ba.R. It was created by the will of 8 neighboring municipalities of the lower Reggio Emilia area that decided to create a company aimed at dealing with waste management in time and in an intelligent way and represents a choice of transparency towards citizens and maximum collaboration with local authorities and supervisory bodies.

The landfill occupies an area of about 500,000 square meters and is able to receive about 2.5 million m3 of waste. The centre houses municipal solid waste which, in its decomposition process, develops biogas; The latter is enhanced by capturing and using it in the production of electricity through cogeneration modules.

The biogas resulting from the fermentation processes of the banked waste masses is used as fuel to produce energy. The biogas, suitably captured from the storage basins, is conveyed for exploitation to the cogenerationplant where it is used for the production of electricity and heat. With this 4 MWe plant, The heat is intended to heat 5,000 square meters of greenhouses for the cultivation of basil and for heating the outbuildings (offices and warehouses) through District heating network, while the electricity produced, net of the plant’s own consumption, is sold to the electricity grid.
