Green hydrogen is obtained by the process of electrolysis, which involves the splitting of water using electricity, with simultaneous production of oxygen.

How it is produced

Hydrogen is produced by a process called electrolysis, which uses an electrical charge produced by renewable energy sources to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. When water comes into contact with two electrons (one positively charged and the other negatively charged), its molecules dissociate into H+ hydrogen ions and OH^– hydroxide ions. In this way, hydrogen ions gain electrons and transform into hydrogen gas, while hydroxide ions give up electrons, leading to the formation of oxygen.

The process of electrolysis

At the end of the process, hydrogen can be collected, stored and later used as a heat source for district heating and as a fuel for sustainable transportation and industry. Because of the multitude of benefits it produces, Green Hydrogen is for all intents and purposes a clean energy carrier that can make a significant contribution to the decarbonization process, reducing the amount of CO2 emissions and helping to protect the planet.

The new frontiers of hydrogen

CPL CONCORDIA is able to handle all the technical and administrative aspects of the facilities constituting the entire hydrogen supply chain and the subsequent realization and operation, starting from the production of electricity from renewable sources, proceeding with electrolysis plants to metering and feed-in stations and fuel cell power supply. The Cooperative accompanies clients through all phases of the project, with initial assesments, proposals for efficiencies and possibilities for accessing NRP funding calls, including the possible integration of analysis and calibration services, inspection audits and control systems.

One of the most widely discussed issues is the possibility of developing a sustainable mobility system: a possible lever for overall improvement in the quality of life through, among other things, the reduction of emissions required for the movement and production of vehicles. In heavy transport and public transportation, green hydrogen is able to provide sufficient energy for long and heavy loads and reduces congestion in dedicated refueling spaces, providing cost-effectiveness in the process of transforming the distribution network compared to that for electric vehicles. CPL CONCORDIA‘s commitment takes the form of the upcoming construction of new fueling stations with the aim of reducing the environmental impact from pollutant emissions for heavy and rail transportation.

The development of this new supply chain, in full compliance with the circular economy theme, involves a wide range of technologies, industries and service sectors, and significant potential in terms of production value, sustainability and employment. For the chemical, refining, metallurgical, steel, food & beverage, textile and automotive industries that consume the 63% of methane gas, hydrogen represents the ideal carrier for a decarbonization process, while for district heating it can be a viable alternative due to its compatibility with existing gas networks and district heating and/or combined electric/thermal generation plants.
