Castello Farm

The Castello farm in Gambarana, Pavia, covers an area of 100 hectares and is dedicated to the traditional cultivation of cereals and rice.

Needs

The crops grown by the Castello farm include some that are less profitable but useful as energy sources (ryegrass, triticale, etc.). The need is represented by the possibility to use these crops in an intelligent way for the process of biogas digestion, deriving considerable financial benefits.

Solutions

Ryegrass, triticale, bernina accompany corn in the search for a product with a higher energy conversion.
CPL CONCORDIA built a biogas co-generation system powered by agricultural biomass produced by the farm. The figures of the plant are as follows:

  • 526 kWe of installed power
  • 4,500 MWh of electricity produced per year
  • > 7,500 tonnes per year of silage (corn, triticale, sorghum) to fuel the plant
  • Over 2,000,000 m3 of biogas produced per year

With more than 35 years of experience and over 500 installed plants, CPL is the most reliable partner for the construction and maintenance of co-generation plants fuelled by methane and biogas, able to ensure the best management and maintenance performance to maximise energy efficiency and profit for the benefit of customers and their businesses.

Advantages

  • The digestate produced by the anaerobic process has a nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content that makes it excellent for use as fertiliser. Thanks to the digestate, in 2008 the farm saved a chemical fertilisation cycle, taking a huge step towards a more sustainable management of the region
  • 8,719 operating hours and 4,500 MWh produced (equivalent to the annual consumption of about 1,500 households) represent the contribution to the need for clean and renewable energy for the planet
