CUS Università La Sapienza

Cogeneration with hydrogen fuel enhancement

CPL CONCORDIA has built a cogeneration plant that produces 60 kW of electrical power and 120 kW of thermal power, that is fueled with a methanehydrogen mixture.

Requirements

This is a unique plant in Italy that will ensure the energy supply to the University Sports Center (CUS), a facility of Università Sapienza di Roma that is considered to be one of the most prestigious at the international university campus level. It will be a system of energy acquisition, developed in the context of the Joint Lab Program of Sapienza Innovazione and financed by the Region of Lazio, that will have the features of a true laboratory facility.

The electricity produced will almost completely satisfy the requirements of the sports center, while the thermal energy will be used, together with that produced by the heating plant, to heat the water for the central heating system and to heat the covered swimming pool’s water. This will make possible an energy savings of 25%.

Advantages

The new revolution consists of fueling the cogenerator with an enriched mixture of hydrogen (hydrogen fuel enhancement) with a variable composition (within a range of 0 - 10% by volume) and with a reduction in atmospheric emissions of between 15% and 20%. The hydrogen is obtained by means of the photoelectrolysis of water using an electrolyzer. The electric power supply for the operation of the electrolyzer is produced by a system of photovoltaic solar panels. This laboratory facility of Università La Sapienza not only allows a reduction in the energy bill, but is also able to analyze the performance of the motor and the emission of greenhouse gases, thereby subsequently providing the technical specifications for the large-scale construction of turnkey systems.
